The Consignment Process
1. Tell Us What You Have
Send photographs and a brief description of the items or collection you are considering for consignment.
2. We Review your items
We consider condition, buyer demand, likely resale value, preparation requirements, and the selling channels best suited to the items.
3. We Recommend a Plan
If the items are a good fit for The Exchange, we will recommend the appropriate service, commission structure, and selling method before anything is accepted.
4. We Handle the Sale
The Exchange manages research, preparation, photography, listing creation, promotion, buyer communication, payment, and fulfillment.
5. You Receive Your fulfillment packet
We email your packet including sale information. commission breakdown, and consignment documents.
6. You Receive Your Proceeds
After an item has sold and the applicable transaction or return period has ended, you receive your portion of the proceeds.
Item Selection
Curated Consignment is intentionally selective. We accept items based on condition, desirability, expected resale value, storage availability, and compatibility with our marketplace and other selling channels.
Items should generally be clean, complete, functional, and ready to be offered for sale. Acceptance does not guarantee a sale, and prices may be adjusted in response to market conditions, buyer interest, or the length of time an item has been listed.
Important Pricing Note
Commission rates are confirmed after the initial evaluation. Collections requiring extensive sorting, cleaning, research, transportation, storage, or specialized handling may be quoted at a different rate. Any additional costs will be discussed and approved before the consignment agreement is finalized.
Estate Services
Managing an estate can be physically demanding, time-consuming, and deeply personal. The Exchange provides thoughtful, organized assistance to families, executors, and individuals navigating an inheritance, relocation, downsizing, or major life transition.
We begin by evaluating the contents of the estate and identifying which items may be appropriate for direct sale, consignment, donation, or another form of disposition. From there, we create a plan based on the estate’s contents, timeline, location, and the level of assistance required.
Our role is to make the process more manageable while ensuring that marketable belongings receive careful consideration and clear accounting.

Our Estate Process
1. Begin With a Conversation
Tell us about the estate, its location, the general contents, your timeline, and the people responsible for making decisions.
2. Review the Estate
We examine the contents and consider condition, demand, expected resale value, required labor, access, and the most practical selling options.
3. Establish a Plan
You receive a recommended scope of service outlining responsibilities, commission, anticipated expenses, important dates, and the proposed handling of unsold belongings.
4. Prepare and Conduct the Sale
Once an agreement is in place, The Exchange coordinates the research, pricing, organization, presentation, promotion, and management required for the sale.
5. Settle the Estate
After transactions have been completed, we provide the designated representative with an accounting of sales, applicable expenses, commission, and net proceeds.
EVERY ESTATE IS DIFFERENT.
Some estates are best served by an on-site sale, while others benefit from individual consignment, grouped online listings, direct purchase offers, or a combination of methods. An initial assessment allows us to recommend an approach based on the actual contents of the estate rather than applying the same solution to every situation.
Not every estate will contain enough marketable inventory to support a professionally managed sale. When another option would be more practical, we will explain that honestly and offer recommendations whenever possible.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES:
Depending on the estate and location, optional services may include:
- Additional sorting and organization
- Packing and inventory assistance
- Photography and cataloging
- Online marketplace listings
- Consignment of selected pieces
- Donation coordination
- Pickup and transportation planning
- Coordination with movers, cleaners, and removal services
- Reseller, business, or remaining-inventory evaluation
IMPORTANT PRICING INFORMATION
All estate pricing is confirmed after an assessment. Commission covers only the services specifically identified in the signed agreement. Extraordinary cleaning, extensive trash removal, moving expenses, storage, repair work, and third-party services are not automatically included.
No property is sold, donated, discarded, or removed without authorization from the estate’s designated representative. The representative must confirm that they have the legal authority to make decisions regarding the property before services begin.
Collection Liquidation
Collections often carry more than monetary value. They may represent years of searching, specialized knowledge, personal memories, or a carefully developed interest. When the time comes to sell, an effective liquidation plan considers both the individual pieces and the collection in its entirety.
The Exchange evaluates the collection, researches the appropriate market, and determines whether the contents should be sold individually, grouped into lots, offered to specialized buyers, or managed through a combination of selling methods.
Our goal is to secure the strongest practical return while giving the collection the research, presentation, and attention it warrants.
